United States Squirrel Species
There are almost 200 species of the squirrel that lived throughout the world. Some of the species lived in the united state. People who want to know how many types of squirrel lived in the united state? The united state is home to 5 squirrel species. Some of them lived on the tree while others prefer to live on the ground. The other one prefers to fly. A squirrel that lived on the tree they have bushy tails. Squirrel has fur that helps them to fly from one tree to another.
The five species that lived in the united state are:
Gray squirrel
The United States is the living place of two gray squirrel species. One is eastern gray, and the second is the western gray squirrel. You can find the eastern gray squirrel in the northern united state, although this specie has invaded the western united state and Canada too. The western gray squirrel is founded to be live in three different places. These are large squirrels, and you may found them in a variety of colors. Their color is red, black, gray, and brown.
Fox squirrel
This squirrel founded throughout the united state except for the eastern coast. Fox squirrel is considered the large specie among the other squirrel types, and they range from 17 to 27 inches. This type of squirrel comes into two different colors. Some of you may found them in black and gray with dark fur with the tan of gold undersides. They have blackheads but the nose, the ear will be white.
The other squirrel will be in red, tan, or orange. There will be no marking on the red fox.
Red squirrel
They will be half in size as compared to the gray squirrel. These squirrels have fur that changes the color during winter and summer. In winter, their fur color will be gray-red while in the summer orange-red. The red squirrel is also known as pine squirrel, they lived in the coldest areas like northern states, and they like to live in a pine forest.
Ground squirrel
The other type of squirrel is ground squirrel, and their origin is a united state. These rodents like to live in open habitats like prairies. This is the smallest specie with a white-tail with a weight of 3-4 ounce. This specie has a habit of chewing so they can be a reason to damage your garden.
Flying squirrel
Flying squirrel has two species, northern flying squirrel and southern, and both of them lived in the united state. You may find the northern squirrel larger of two species. They usually found in the higher elevation of California, Arizona, and Alaska.
While the southern flying squirrel is lived in the eastern half of the united state specifically in lower elevation down in Florida, they are very small in size, but they are quick, which makes it difficult to find them. They can fly from one tree to the other, and you may even not feel they have jumped.
